      <image:title>Production - Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective - Interviews</image:title>
      <image:caption>Some of the “actors” felt more comfortable in front of the camera, whilst others needed time to settle within the interviewing process. I had to adapt to these different temperaments.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective - Cramped filming</image:title>
      <image:caption>The photographs make the brewery look large. It is a 3m by 4m shed, filled with brewing equipment, a wood burning stove, and seven men brewing beer.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/af0aaab4-fd8a-43c7-9614-9ceb6a65240a/Working+Brewery.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Production - Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective</image:title>
      <image:caption>There was different lighting inside the brewery, compared to the lighting outside of the brewery. I made the mistake of keeping my camera set to auto white balance. This made colour correction fairly tricky in post production.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/940e546c-ad8d-43af-804b-6798ca92d5f7/Andi.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Production - Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective - Re-recording Audio</image:title>
      <image:caption>A challenge I faced with the audio is that Andi’s whistle near the end of the movie spiked the lavalier mics, meaning that any audio input after that moment was compromised. This meant that I had to re-record some of the audio after that point. Luckily, I was using two lavalier mics, and due to the small space in the brewery, audio from the uncompromised channel was still usable. I then duplicated the single channel to make the audio sound natural. The whistle had to be re-recorded.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production - Divergent - Filming Outdoors</image:title>
      <image:caption>Directing my actor across distances during medium-wide and long shots was particularly tricky. I had to frame shots and shout directions across echoey and windy valleys or rushing streams where the actor and I could barely hear each other’s voices.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/9385443a-b9cb-44a8-abc9-4ae8afff09c4/Divergent-5205.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Production - Production - Divergent - Equipment</image:title>
      <image:caption>This film was also shot with the Sony ZV-E1 with the 35mm lens. It would have been beneficial to have a 100-200 mm lens. This would have made the distant background mountains seem more prominent and epic in my shots. The gimbal was critical, particularly when filming tracking shots on uneven terrain. Many of the forest and river shots were filmed using the gimbal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production - Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sound I learnt lessons from filming “Coffee” and “The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective.” I knew that a camera-mounted shotgun mic would not work in the outdoor space. I used lavalier mics with dead cats to capture the dialogue between the two actors. Based on my experience filming the Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective, I did my best to monitor the sound during production. This was difficult as I was balancing multiple roles during production.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/63e657b4-d3b7-497c-b01f-f6e3b7e5ca5e/Divergent-5233.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Production - Production - Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lighting Across the three days of filming, the vast majority of scenes were shot with natural light, other than the indoor shots during the final scene. To show the continuity of the journey, it was essential to maintain consistent exposure across the variable weather and available light while filming. I used the Xrite colour passport every time I changed location or shot angle. This was hugely beneficial in creating a consistent look for the film.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production Coffee - Tripod - locked off.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Most of this film was shot locked off on a tripod with little to no camera movement. I decided to shoot in this way as it matched the clean and precise aesthetic of the story. The tripod was also helpful in capturing some of the overhead shots I knew I needed. The other reason the film was shot locked off was practical. I was one of the actors in the film, and I was able to compose the shot on the tripod before moving into position for the shot.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production Coffee</image:title>
      <image:caption>I matched the light settings to daylight so as to minimise the work I needed to do in colour correcting. One of the challenges I had was that the coffee machine was highly reflective. I had to reposition my light and my camera so that I did not inadvertently appear in the reflection of the coffee machine. Annoyingly, in one of the opening shots, you can see the tripod legs reflected by the coffee machine.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production Coffee</image:title>
      <image:caption>The actor was great in that this was almost like a documentary for him. He is truly passionate about coffee, and he struggles to understand why someone is not passionate about coffee. Most of the direction I gave him was asking him to go through the ritual of making coffee as I filmed it from multiple angles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Production - Production Coffee - Voice Over</image:title>
      <image:caption>My friend, Judah Simmons, was the writer of the script, and I was the editor. Judah created a script based on how he saw coffee as an art form. He sent his script to me in the form of a voice note. I transcribed that voice note and refined the script to fit a shorter length. Once we filmed the footage for the film itself, we then recorded the refined version of Judah’s script with a Rode Pro caster mic into Garage Band. We surrounded ourselves with blankets to avoid any echo effect that the living room could have caused.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective</image:title>
      <image:caption>My goal was to limit the film length to five minutes, and that meant I had to limit some of the meaningful content that could not be fully explored in a five-minute film. This scene of Lee consoling Dez when he shared he was a “pity invite” was a painful victim of my disciplined editing approach.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production - The Gentlemen’s Brewing Collective</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you look at the timeline of this film Above, you will see the numerous cuts in audio and b-roll. The reason for this is that the beginning and the end of the film were scripted. As the editor, I had to find the central part of the narrative amongst the “actors’” responses to my questions and somehow edit this together into a cohesive narrative.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>Originally, I wanted this shot to showcase the fork in the road to represent cognitive difference. However, I much prefer this shot because by having both characters on opposite ends of the frame, it clearly defines them as the symbols of cognitive difference within the movie.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025336887-UPV2XCQSRTM757ZZ1DHR/Hand+on+Bridge.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>In this shot, I wanted the viewer to feel involved in the neurodivergent protagonists sensory experience of this environment. I, therefore, used a tracking shot with leading lines to draw in the viewer’s attention to the textures of the bridge.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025365136-O6PG50K9EVHAFWXQ2W4C/Mountains.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>In this first shot, the protagonist is placed on the lower half of the frame, making her seem smaller compared to the vast landscape of mountains ahead of her.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025381939-PWED5H0U6Y4GM5O5QG79/Big+as+Mountains.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>In this second shot, the camera is below the protagonist’s eye level, making the protagonist appear higher in the frame and taller. This conveys the protagonist’s confidence and determination to overcome their challenges.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>Since neurodiversity is the “scenic route” , in this shot, I contrasted that using leading lines and symmetry to show the efficiency and more ordered way of thinking that neurotypical cognitive processes typically have.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025432022-S11Z60HR0HNRXS7YZ3LA/wiggly+lines.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>This shot contrasts with the previous shot . Here, the neurodiverse character is walking along a winding gravel path, visually conveying how the neurodiverse path, whilst not the most common path to walk, is unpredictable and interesting to follow, leading you to beautiful discoveries.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>By having my actor silhouetted and surrounded by the negative space of the sky, this shot, and the next shot, represent a journey from darkness heading towards the light.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025464165-EEUTLSGO5I3NS17RNZXC/Big+Sky+2.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>I find these shots incredibly powerful because it’s often the final moments before you reach your goal that require the most resilience, and these two shots for me truly communicate the resilience that comes with having neurodiversity.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025484237-JA7OK7F49TT6WEEDKH8J/top+of+the+mountain.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>I wanted this summit moment to be the ultimate climax of the film. I wanted to convey the protagonist’s sense of accomplishment and pride. Therefore, I really wanted to utilise the negative space of the sky to highlight the protagonist as the central focus of the shot.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6921c84ea0232a07b945ca23/1764025504267-2HZ4AKTLNF0W4IDEQC28/Dark+Road.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>I love this shot because it is the second time we see the house. However, the difference between the shots is the angle of the shot, which is symbolic of how people with neurodiversity can often provide a different and meaningful perspective on the same subject matter.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>These shots contrast the two experiences of the protagonists. Whilst the neurotypical character experienced the views of Scotland through a book…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent</image:title>
      <image:caption>…the neurodiverse character experienced the views of Skye in person, capturing memories as she went. Whilst both experiences work for either person, this shot symbolises how, from my perspective, neurodiversity ultimately provides people with a richer experience of life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent - Hue vs Hue</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once the shot had been white balanced, I could adjust the hue. I would locate the shot of the Xrite colour passport in the browser, disable the underlying layer, place a mask over the primary hues on the colour board. I would then adjust the hues so that they were correct according to the vector scope.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post Production - Post Production Divergent - White Balance</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once I had adjusted the exposure, I would use the colour picker to balance the colour using Final Cut Pro’s balance colour effect. Since I was filming outside in a natural environment, I had very few pure white sources for colour correction. With the shifting light conditions, due to the unpredictable Scottish weather, the Xrite colour passport shots at the start of every sequence were incredible useful in post production.</image:caption>
